Il y a un siècle, en France comme en Allemagne, on associait Luther au nationalisme allemand. Aujourd'hui nous soulignons avant tout sa quête religieuse et sa démarche théologique, qui mettent en évidence le Dieu miséncordieux à l'égard du pécheur qui lui fait confiance. Luther a défini l'Église, fondée sur l'Écriture sainte, comme lieu où le Christ se rend présent par la Parole et les sacrements et fait de tous les croyants des prêtres, en charge de leur prochain. Par son message, il a suscité une nouvelle manière de vivre la foi chrétienne de toujours. Son action a eu aussi un impact culturel et social, en particulier dans le domaine de la musique, et par sa valorisation de l'individu et des autorités politiques. Témoin passionné de l'Évangile, interprété dans l'Écriture, Luther avait aussi ses limites. Entre Luther et notre époque, des mouvements teh que la confessionnalisation, les Lumières, les Réveils, de nouvelles méthodes exégétiques et l'œcuménisme contemporain ont marqué le protestantisme de leur empreinte. Le message de Luther peut néanmoins nous inspirer dans notre annonce de l'Évangile aujourd'hui. |
